The Navigators Development Association says it has registered some success in its efforts to push for justice amongst the people affected by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project (EACOP).

Addressing Stakeholders at a Regional Conference on Corporate Accountability, Mr Benon Tusingwire, the Executive Director, NAVODA said, their image was tainted in the face of EACOP management until later when they appreciated that NAVODA was looking at issues affecting community but not fighting the oil projects.

Nowadays we can seat on a round table with EACOP management and discuss issues brought raised by communities and agree to address them.

“Some people who complained over low compensation or their properties not being assessed had their properties reassessed and their compensation packages raised,” he said.

He however, said the oil sector developments induced issues and other corporate organizations are still many and needs concerted efforts among all stake holders to address.

According to him, some companies are not cooperative to the Civil Society Organisations and do not want to be questioned.

During the same engagement, Ms Alen Tushabe, the East African Regional Consultant, Bank Information Centre urged the Civil Sociey Organisaitons (CSO’s) in the Albertine region to be proactive and help the vulnerable people because there are all indicators that human rights violations will increase alongside increasing industrialization and relation developments.

This regional engagement on corporate accountability was organized by the Uganda Consortium on Corporate Accountability (UCCA) in partnership with Navigators of Development Association (NAVODA) at lHoima Resort Hotel in Hoima city.

Mr Joseph Byaruhanga, the Coordinator, UCCA said, they have 25 CSOs under the consortium.
